About Us

The Sustainable Mail Group is a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming the mail industry in Canada to build a better, cleaner future.

The Sustainable Mail Group (SMG)

The mail industry in Canada is at a crossroads. We can either lead our industry into a cleaner, more sustainable future, or allow the industry to fall behind the public’s expectations. We have the responsibility to maintain the highest environmental standards: the mail industry is too important to Canadians and to our economy.

Paper manufacturers, marketers, printers, and mailing houses are beginning to recognize the urgency of the situation, and as a result, over the past year a group of mail industry leaders have come together to promote large scale sustainable change within the mail value chain. The Sustainable Mail Group (SMG) is our vehicle for implementing this change. Our mission is:

To be stewards of the environment, working within the direct mail industry to offer continuous thought leadership and sustainable solutions that meet consumer demand for responsible mail.

Transforming the mail industry is within reach. We all know at least some of the steps to take, however, we need to take collective and collaborative action if we are to bring about the necessary

transformation. We need widespread cooperation to share knowledge and build momentum toward achieving our vision:

“A mail ecosystem where industry professionals are working together to produce sustainable mail for a better, cleaner future.

It’s not just about the mail industry at large. Every member of the mail value chain has a stake in creating a better cleaner future. Regardless of your organization’s size or role in the ecosystem, your future will be shaped by our success in transforming the mail industry.

Join the SMG to help build a sustainable mail value chain and move your organization along the path to a more environmentally responsible future. Members will have access to important resources:

  • Sustainability road maps

How we are organized...

The Sustainable Mail Group (SMG) is organized as a division of the National Association of Major Mail Users (NAMMU). NAMMU is a charter member of the SMG. To support SMG’s mission and drive industry participation, NAMMU has provided the not-for-profit and administrative framework required to ensure a smooth, fast, and efficient start and continued growth.

Although under the NAMMU umbrella, SMG operates independently, with its own executive team. SMG represents the interests of the complete supply chain in creating a sustainable mail industry.

Our membership is open to anyone with an interest in the sustainability and importance of the mail industry to Canada.
